Fire your plow guy today! - Skye Nacel

Well, now that I have your attention...Last year we spent about $450 dollars for plowing out at our spot in the hills. It's a 150-foot driveway that heads a bit uphill with a big old curve at the end. This year we are determined to handle it on our own, by hand! So after shopping around locally we bought one of the newfangled plastic snow scoops that was actually made in Canada (gasp...not China?!). It's a hell of a lot more lightweight than the wood one I grew up using, but we'll see how it…

I knew I needed to get out of town, to stretch my legs and my mind.  Life has a way of getting you into a comfortable routine, but you need to know when to break out of it. I don’t like to just take a ride for the hell of it—it's great to have a destination. Fortunately, a great opportunity presented itself: Meeting my brother and his friends to celebrate his birthday in Carmel, on the California coast about 130 miles south of our home in Berkeley.

But these last two weeks I was…

Being an outdoor enthusiast, lover of the outdoors, tree hugger, dirt worshiper, earth mama, grass sniffer, forest freak, ocean lover, sun worshiper…whatever name you want to give it…I feel a need to protect these beloved playgrounds from the waste of our existence.

Plastic is abundant on our shores, in our ocean and thus in our bodies. It finds a way to entangle itself around rocks, roots, and marine life and in a vast plastic wasteland in the Pacific Ocean called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is roughly…

My First Great Marathon, Kim Hurst

My name is Kim and last weekend I ran my first marathon. Never in a million years did I think I would ever call myself "a runner," much less actually run 26.2 miles...for fun! But back in March of this year, two of my sisters who have run marathons in the past convinced me that training for and running a marathon would be a great idea. No, "an awesome idea!" I'll admit, there might have been a glass or two of wine involved when I actually jumped on the computer and registered. Once the…
