Walking the Ridgeline - Sarah and Tristan

There are some beautiful places out there, and many of them can be seen only by foot. An excellent way to see a lot of backcountry in a single day is ridge-walking on a hiking trail. One such place that has captured our imaginations is the Monroe Skyline on the Long Trail (LT) in Vermont, and this is where we found ourselves one recent day. Spanning about 12 miles, this Skyline day hike runs from Lincoln Gap (at Lincoln Gap Road) to Appalachian Gap (at Vermont Route 17). The hike is flanked by Mt. Abe and Mad River Glen as its…

Nothing New - Angela Grace

I decided to try not to purchase anything new in 2012. I kind of randomly decided, without much fanfare or announcement on Facebook. No final shopping spree, or online search, or assessment of my basics. I just keep thinking about how much I have, and how much waste there is in new things, and how most things I would need in 2012 I could get used.

We are not big shoppers, but we are kind of spontaneous people. We decide to stop at REI and all of a sudden remember we ‘need’ a new headlamp. We go…

iRun with Map My Run - Sky Barsch

One of Vermont Sports Magazine's Get Out bloggers, Greg Rems, wrote a post a few weeks back about using technology with your training. Since then, I’ve downloaded the Map My Run app on my iPhone, and this spring I’ve been using it to track my runs, bikes, and hikes.

Like Greg, I’ve noticed that I have fallen into the trap of needing to see my workout on a computer screen to “believe” that I did it. Before I indulge in some nachos, I open Map My Run (which…

Camel’s Hump, Vermont, from the Waterbury Side - The Valentine Family

We enjoyed a great two-family hike up Camel's Hump on Memorial Day weekend. We approached the mountain from the Waterbury side, having previously hiked from the Richmond side, and found that we much prefer the Waterbury approach. The day was beautiful, and our only complaint was the blackflies. Between two families, we had four adults, three 10-year-olds, a 12-year-old, a 14-year-old, and two dogs.

The summit was well worth the hike. On our perfectly clear day, the views in all directions were amazing and kept us snapping photos and enjoying our picnic lunch for almost an…

Follow the trail to the end - it’s well worth it! - Per Tonn

Summer seems to finally be here in Vermont! Yesterday I went on another hiking adventure with my little son. I packed him up in the carrier after breakfast and off we went, up to the College of Fine Arts and down the trail to Sabin's Pasture. Sabin’s Pasture is this weird big empty field between Barre Street and Towne Hill Road. We've been up there a couple of times - the first time when I was walking on Sabin Street and suddenly felt the urge to be on a trail. So I asked the next…
