Vermont Handcyclist to Compete in 2012 Paralympic Games

The Olympics aren't over! The Paralympic Games started this week, and a Vermont cyclist is among the athletes competing. Paralympic athletes have a physical disability, but that doesn't stop them from training and competing in over 20 sports including archery, cycling, powerlifting, rowing, swimming, and much more.

Alicia Brelsford Dana, a native of Putney, Vermont, is in London right now and will compete next week as a handcyclist in the road cycling event. Handcycles are arm-powered; Brelsford Dana doesn't have use of her legs, but clearly her arms are as strong as her spirit.

Between the Tour de France and the Olympics, I heard a lot about biking this summer. Now, I should be clear: I'm not really a biker. I have a bike; two in fact – an old green Trek mountain bike I found in someone's barn, got tuned up, and rode about five times in three years; and this snazzy Specialized Vita hybrid my sweetie's uncle picked out for me at his awesome bike shop, Joe Fix Its. As a child, I hated gym class. I was an indoorsy kid: pale, bookish, non-athletic. I didn't play on any sports teams or win the President's Physical Fitness Award. When it came time to pick sides, I cringed; I knew I was no one's first choice – why should I be?
